Apple Moves Toward a Larger iPhone Screen

By LORRAINE LUK And JURO OSAWA

Manufacturers say Apple has placed an order for larger display screens for the next generation of iPhone. The WSJ?s Juro Osawa tells Deborah Kan about what?s in store for the new device.

HONG KONG?Apple Inc., AAPL +0.27% which is expected to launch its next-generation iPhone later this year, has ordered screens from its Asian suppliers that are bigger than the ones used in iPhones since they debuted in 2007, people familiar with the situation said.

Production is set to begin next month for the screens, which measure at least 4 inches diagonally compared with 3.5 inches on the iPhone 4S, the latest phone from Apple, the people said.

The move suggests that the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is trying to make its popular smartphone more appealing amid intensifying competition from rival Samsung Electronics Co. of South Korea. Samsung, which became the world?s biggest cell phone maker in the first quarter, recently unveiled its new flagship smartphone with a 4.8-inch display, one of the largest smartphone screens.

apple0516

Bloomberg NewsAs Apple prepares for a launch of a new iPhone later this year, people familiar with the situation say the company is planning for a larger screen. Above, the Apple store in Hong Kong.

Until now, Apple has never changed the size of the iPhone?s screen, which has always been 3.5 inches from the first model that debuted in 2007. For the next iPhone, which analysts predict will come out in the fall, Apple is working with multiple screen makers including South Korea?s LG Display Co., LPL -3.60% Japan?s Sharp Corp. 6753.TO -2.37% and Japan Display Inc., a new company created last month by three Japanese companies and the government, some of the people said.

Apple has also stuck with one size for its iPad tablet, while other manufacturers have produced a range of sizes. The Wall Street Journal reported in February that Apple was testing tablet computers with screens smaller than the 9.7-inch screen on the existing iPads.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment.

Apple effectively defined smartphones as a new category with its iPhone, but the market has rapidly evolved and expanded over the past few years and is now crowded with many brands selling smartphones in various sizes and price ranges.

Apple, the world?s most valuable company, faces particularly fierce challenges from Samsung, which sells a much broader variety of phones. The two companies together account for more than half of the world?s smartphones. In the quarter through March, Samsung shipped 44.5 million smartphones to grab a 30.6% share of the global market, topping Apple?s 24.1% share with 35.1 million iPhones, according to market research firm Strategy Analytics.

This year, analysts expect Samsung?s smartphone shipments to double, while the next iPhone is also expected to boost Apple?s shipments.

Samsung said that the Galaxy S III, a new version of its flagship smartphone, will hit stores in Europe this month and in the U.S. this summer. Its 4.8-inch screen is larger than the 4.3-inch display on the company?s current flagship model Galaxy S II. Taiwan?s HTC Corp., 2498.TW -6.59% another major smartphone maker, also has models with screens larger than 4 inches.

A new iPhone with a larger screen wouldn?t necessarily mean that Apple is making changes to its products because of what rivals are doing, said Mizuho Investors Securities analyst Nobuo Kurahashi.

?The smartphone market has become diverse, but the iPhone still sets the agenda,? with the whole industry watching Apple?s every move, he said. He said that the iPhone?s strength lies in the overall experience including its user interface and applications, and the screen?s size wouldn?t be its defining feature.

?If Apple ever released a lower-priced iPhone, that would be more of a sign that the changing market environment is beginning to affect the company,? he added.

The iPhone remains a big growth engine for Apple, and the phone?s popularity in Asia was a key factor behind the company?s robust earnings for the most recent quarter through March. Its profit nearly doubled in the quarter, while iPhone sales jumped 88%.

Aside from their rivalry in the smartphone market, Samsung and Apple have been locked in a legal battle. Apple last year sued Samsung over smartphone design and patents, and Samsung countersued. At the same time, they are dependent on each other as Apple is the largest customer for Samsung?s component divisions, which make key parts for smartphones and tablets such as chips and displays.

Apple doesn?t manufacture its own products. Like many other major consumer-electronics brands, it hires manufacturing specialists?many of which are from Taiwan and have extensive operations in China?to assemble its gadgets, using components made mostly by Asian suppliers.

India power outage plunges 300 million into sweltering darkness

(CBS/AP) NEW DELHI - The power grid across northern India failed Monday, halting hundreds of trains and leaving millions of people sweating in the heat in one of the worst blackouts in a decade, highlighting the country's inability to feed a growing hunger for energy.

New Delhi's prestigious Metro was among rail services that went down and hospitals shifted to generator power when the country's northern grid crashed about 2:30 a.m. because it could no longer keep up with the huge demand for power in the hot summer. Residents woken from sleep when their fans and air conditioners stopped, came out of their homes in New Delhi's sweltering heat as the entire city turned dark.

By late morning, 60 percent of the power had been restored in the eight northern states affected by the outage, Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said. He said he expected the rest to be back to normal by late afternoon, adding that he was forming a committee to investigate the outage.

CBS News' Sanjay Jha reports that at the peak of the outage, an estimated 300 million people across India's densely populated north were in the dark, and without power for air conditioners and fans. Delhi's ever-congested roads turned to complete gridlock in places Monday morning as traffic lights went dark. Police tried to man some of the busier intersections in the sprawling city.

Shinde announced that the government was setting up a three-member panel to look into the failure of northern power grid.

It was the first time since 2001 that the northern grid had collapsed. But India's demand for electricity has soared since then as its economy has grown sharply, and the outage was a reminder of the country's long road ahead in upgrading its infrastructure to meet its aspirations of being an economic superpower.

In addition, a weak monsoon has kept temperatures higher this year, further increasing electricity usage as people seek to cool off. Shivpal Singh Yadav, the power minister in the state of Uttar Pradesh, home to 200 million people, said that while demand during peak hours hits 11,000 megawatts, the state can only provide 9,000 megawatts.

The grid collapsed because some states apparently drew more power than they were authorized to take to meet the summer demand, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation chief Avnish Awasthi said.

Blackouts are a frequent occurrence in many Indian cities because of a shortage of power and an antiquated electricity grid. At the same time, tens of millions of people living in villages in northern India have no access to the electricity grid at all.

Earlier this month, angry crowds blocked traffic and clashed with police after blackouts in the Delhi suburb of Gurgaon that houses many high-rise apartment blocks and offices. With no power in some neighborhoods for more than 24 hours, people erected blockades that paralyzed traffic for several hours.

Transmission and distribution losses in some states are as much as 50 percent because of theft and connivance of employees in the power industry.

House Ways and Means chairman fighting cancer

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The chairman of the House's tax-writing committee says he's been diagnosed with a "very early, highly treatable and curable type" of cancer.

GOP Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan says in a statement that doctors found non-Hodgkin lymphoma during a recent physical. Camp says he'll continue in Congress and retain his committee chairmanship during chemotherapy.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a cancer that begins in the cells of the immune system. The 59-year-old Camp says he has large B-cell lymphoma. B-cells are a type of white blood cell that helps fight infections.

Camp, who's served since 1991, has said he wants to combine a push to head off pending tax increases with ways to force Congress to revamp the tax code next year.

Raising Asperger's Kids: Practicality: Not Becoming and Autism-Only ...

One of the major aspects of parenting a child with an autism spectrum disorder is trying to figure out how NOT to become a one-topic family. It really does not have to be all autism all the time. I make sure to tell parents that if they liked reading non-autism related books before diagnosis, keep reading these novels. If you liked to play golf, shoot hoops, needlepoint or knit then keep doing that. If you liked getting manis and pedis keep doing that. Go out with your spouse and get a cup of coffee together and don't talk about autism. If you volunteered for a charity keep helping out the needy.? Problem is, people tell me is that I can give this advice its just so much harder to put into effect...guess what ...yes it really is...

Now remember I am talking about when your child is first diagnosed, not how an adult should or would handle their own diagnosis. I am told, for many adults the diagnosis comes as a relief and they wholeheartedly embrace their autism. They throw themselves into understanding themselves by understanding everything they can about autism. I am in no way telling these adults what to do, how to feel or how to approach their autism. For them this is a very personal decision and not something anyone else (NT or autistic)? has a right to dictate.

What I am going to discuss here is how you the parent should? act and what you need to do in order for it not to be "all autism all the time." The reality is, that in the very beginning it is all autism all the time. How could it not be? When you finally get that diagnosis for your child, your instinct as the parent is to try to find ways to help your offspring. You need, you want , you are compelled to find out everything you can about autism so that you understand how to help your child. You want to "fix" everything. You want to make everything better and if not better than more manageable, less painful and confusing for your child.

So yes in the very beginning you delve not the world of autism. Your home becomes a sensory friendly environment. Your refrigerator is full of foods and drinks that you are told may be helpful. You make sure that when you go out that there will be a minimal of sensory issues. You look for "autism-friendly" movie theaters, play groups and schools. Good. This is what you are supposed to do.

But......

You also need to remember that not everything in the world is about autism and as I like to say, your child is more than autism. The child who liked to draw before diagnosis is still the child who liked to draw. The child who liked to write stories is still the child who liked to write stories. The child who liked to ride his bike or play on the jungle gym is still the same child. The child who liked to swim before diagnosis is still the same water-fish. Autism didn't give them the ability to do these things, it may make their perspectives or their ability to analyze a project different than say an typical child, but it is not the autism that gives them their talent, their drive or their gifts. Harness these gifts as gifts. Not as an outgrowth of autism.

I used to have a group of friends, all of us have children on the spectrum.? We were at one time our own little support group. Well one of these friends everytime her son did something would say it was because of the autism. When he swam it was because autistic children liked being in the water. When he listened to classical music it was because autistic children are calmed by this type of music. This attitude used to drive a third member of our group to distraction. She would tell me how much she hated that perspective. Everything that our children do is not because of autism, she would say. Honestly I think this difference, among other realities, led to the breakup of our little group. We expected more from our sons, while the autism-encapsulated-mom not only decided everything was due to autism, but autism was also a great excuse for her as well.

While you recognize that your child is still your child after diagnosis you must remember that YOU are still you after diagnosis too. Yes read as much about autism as you possibly can. Make sure you know about the laws and what programs do and do not work for a child on the spectrum. Understand medical advice and the latest technologies to help your child. Delve deeply into this world. You do have to.....but then...

1. Make sure you have a place in your house that belongs to you and you alone.
? ? ? ? ? When the boys were little and everything about the house was an autism friendly environment, my parents bought me a little black and white television for the kitchen. They told me that I needed to stay connected to the real world. Watch the news they said while I make dinner. It was the best advice. It's why I post information about other topics even on this blog from time to time. You must stay connected to the wider world.
?????????? Have a chair or an area in your bedroom for makeup, and a closet for "nicer" clothes.
?????????? Make sure that you still continue to use face cream and even a little make-up if you want.
?????????? Get your hair cut every few months,? if you can't afford a mani and pedi, then get a manicure at least once a month. Have someone wait on you for a change.Yes the husband can stay with the children for an hour or two while you do this. The hubby will survive and so will the children. Even before we knew that the boys were on the spectrum, I would leave the husband with them for several hours on a weekend day and go do something myself, even if it was only food shopping. They can handle the children and you are allowed some alone time. It's good that they truly learn to understand what your day is really like too. (Listen I understand that not everybody has a partner, but try to find someone to watch the children for a few hours a week if you can or even every other week. Many call it respite, I call it your right to be an adult.)
?????????? Find time to exercise. Even if its no more than going for a walk. Or buy a DVD and have the children do it with you while you are home. Or when they go to school instead of doing the laundry or cleaning the toilets, do some exercise. It's only 30 minutes out of the day.

2. Charity and volunteering
?????????? If you liked to volunteer for your church, synagogue, mosque, or temple before diagnosis still do. If you spent time with the Untied Way or local homeless shelter, still do. I spent time volunteering for a law group that went into schools to teach middle school students about their rights and obligations. I created seminars for my local school about the constitution and coordinated this history with the appropriate school curriculum. I created an ethics seminar for my synagogues education program (the children didn't like the class so it got scrubbed) but heck simply try and teach Sunday school.
? ? ? ? ?? If you wanted to help out with the PTA still do and don't just do it for the special education committee. I purposely did not volunteer for the special education committee while the boys were in school. I helped out as class parent, party coordinator, welcoming committee chair, publishing center support, library aide, and even treasurer of the high school PTA (that one was a hoot since I still can't balance my own checkbook.) People used to ask my why I never participated in the special ed committee and I answered truthfully, that it was important that people see our family as more than an autism family. People needed to see the boys as more than autism or us as more than just a special needs family. Remember society knows that your special needs child takes more money and more effort than a typical school child and it is nice when you can be seen as giving back to the community for something that other people's children can use...seriously a higher percentage of their tax dollars do go to help your child too...
?????????? By the way, this attitude goes for your children in the long run as well. When the boys could join after school clubs I had them join the local volunteer organizations. They helped out by collecting food for the local food bank, collecting childrens books for a local homeless shelter, making posters for? local charity events, raising awareness about the genocide in Darfur, lately they have helped a local horse therapy barn with some construction (they did not see it as an extension of their autism, this project was for Martin Luther King, Jr service day) and this summer they are interning at a local charity doing data entry and what ever else is needed. I had them help out with charity events at our synagogue when they were younger too. If your religious organization has youth groups sign your child up too.
?????????? Now I did and still am a volunteer parent advocate in my town. I am there to help parents of newly diagnosed children and to shepherd them through the education process if they want. But it is done privately with the school district. My name is not on a roster nor is my name part of the CSE committee members. My services are just offered when a parent applies for an evaluation. Listen, I said do other things besides autism or special needs, I didn't say don't help others if you can....

3. Your professional and education life
?????????? I will admit right away that I am one of those very lucky women who could chose to stay home with my children. The hubby earned enough money that we were able to give the boys what they needed. OK, I will also admit it, we have an obscene amount of debt too. But that just goes with the territory of special needs parenting I think. The issue for me was who would do a better job at raising the boys, me or a stranger. Luckily I really didn't have to think? too long about this issue. Hats off to the single-special-needs-parent or any working-parent-couple of special needs children. Coordinating that reality is something I never had to face and I am not certain what I would have done.
? ? ? ? ? ? Remember too, if you are one of those parents who goes to work, its OK to like what you do and to be away from home for awhile as well. It's just fine to think about your professional life and to care about your professional future. Don't guilt yourself. I have friends of typical children who love to work because they like having daily grown-up conversations. These people like that they inhabit two worlds and not just one. Being a special needs parents doesn't mean you can't and shouldn't feel the same.
? ? ? ? ? ? But for those of us who do stay home, another way to not becoming inundated with autism is to remember that you were trained in a profession and have some skill sets that are very important. After the boys were diagnosed I decided that I needed to continue with my professional life. I actually had never passed the Bar Exam in the state and I decided to try again. I bought an on-line study course and I coordinated my program. I studied between therapy appointments, laundry, cooking, food shopping and mommy-taxi time. I studied with two small children either sitting on my lap or sitting next to me. And yes I passed. It was something I had to do for myself. Have I ever really practiced law? I tried part-time from home, but nope it really didn't work out at all. No, sometimes you really can't have it all.
?????????? Today there is so much on-line education and professional programs that you can continue to learn and practice your skills without actually leaving home. Remember that little corner of a room for your make-up and clothes....add a computer and/or text books. Don't stop learning and don't give up what you have learned.
? ? ? ? ? ? Also telecommuting is a major part of business today. Don't just give up everything you have worked for. Talk to your boss, see what you can work out. Or start a business from home. So many moms do it, especially in today's economy. You would not seem like the odd-person out. (I know I talk a good game, but in reality I still haven't figured out a business from home. As I said, I am still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.)

In truth there is alot you can do to not become an autism-only family. But this mainly depends on the time and effort you put into remaining a rounded person. It takes work to accomplish this goal. It will not happen simply because you want it to. In all honesty while your children are little, you will be more of an autism-only family. You are working on understanding and coordinating everything in their lives to set them on the right path. As they grow up and you see what they are also interested in and where their talents lay, you too can loosen the autism-strings and as they fly so can you. When you have more hours during the day to yourself, you will find that you can rediscover yourself as well.

Everything I mentioned in this post is not something I did or accomplished from the get-go. Initially as I wrote, my parents bought me a little television to stay connected to the world. That and studying and passing the bar are the two things that kept me in the wider-world. You need to understand that everything is incremental in this world and that the steps you take do not have to be huge ones either. For example: crossword puzzles. I love puzzles. For years everyday I did the New York Times crossword puzzle. That was my challenge and that was my escape, so to speak. Remember to keep yourself its the little things, not the big things that count.

This is also why I started the blog The Rediscovered Self. As an autism-parent I realized that so many of us forget ourselves and what gives us joy. We spend out lives worried and frightened for our children and what the future may hold for them. But you need to try not to live that way. Plan and coordinate as best you can. Do what you can for your children. But a depressed parent, a parent who forgets their own humanity will not be a help to their children ever.

From B is for Balance:

Balance. I would have to say that that has probably been one of the hardest aspects of life with special needs children. Oh not that you don't balance their lives. Between therapies, doctors, school, "typical" activities and just plain doing nothing, we all seem to be able to balance our children's lives. What I am concerned about when I speak to many parents of special needs children is the ability of the parent to balance their lives.

Yes, when you have a child your obligation is to make sure that that child has every advantage in the world. Yes, as parent you have the obligation to provide, nurture and support your child as they grow, develop and mature. Yes as a parent you have the obligation to ensure that your children thrive.

The problem that happens though is that we forget that we too are entitled to grow, develop and thrive along with our children. You do not cease to be a person because you are a parent. You do not cease to be a person because you are a parent of a special needs child. You do not cease to have your likes, dislikes, needs and wants as well.

This is when the balancing becomes important. You need to find the time to remember that you too are a person. Now do I speak from experience of being able to balance my life? Absolutely not. I speak from experience of NOT? being able to balance my life. I speak from experience of demoting my own importance. Read this mea culpa to see how sorely lacking I am in this regard.

Listen it is not that you relegate your obligations and the love you have for your child to the back burner when you do something for yourself. It is merely making sure that you remember your own humanity. Now what exactly am I talking about?

What I am talking about is that YOU are allowed to go with a friend to get a cup of coffee without the children just like parents of typical children do. You are allowed to have lunch, go to a movie and even have a date with your spouse. I am talking about reading a newspaper or a book that has nothing to do with autism, but may be part of a hobby that YOU love. I am talking about that it is OK to get a manicure and a haircut. It is OK to buy yourself some makeup if that makes you feel better. It is OK for you to go for walks, exercise and eat food that you enjoy, not just eating the leftovers from your child's meal. It is OK that YOU are not subsumed by your child's special needs. It is OK to still be YOU.

Weight Control Can Cut Women's Diabetes Risk, Study Shows

FRIDAY, July 27 (HealthDay News) -- Weight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Hispanics and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; blacks were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

"Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes," primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. "A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women."

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn't produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs.

Tips For Traversing The Commercial Real Estate Market | Buy ...

Buying commercial property can be majorly rewarding for you or it could cause you a major headache. This kind of real estate purchasing is not complicated, nevertheless it does require some knowledge so that you don?t end up losing cash. This list of tips should put you ?in the know? on the way to be a smarter consumer.

Don't forget to check out commercial property auctions when you're searching for property to buy. You could get a building for a cheap price if you're at the right spot and right time. Most auctions have online sites where you can see all of the info about the property, and get pre-qualified all from the comfort of your home.

When making an investment in commercial real-estate, you must look over the financing and know if the mortage payment is just interest, or whether it includes principal and interest. In addition, you should really know the amortization schedule that is utilized to figure the principal payment. The most effective way to grow equity has principal and interest payments over a short amortisation period.

Before you invest in something, you ought to be a leading figure on this type of real-estate. For example, if you would like to invest in residences, you should really know about legislation, safety necessities and have an excellent idea of what being a landlord means. If you're thinking about making an investment in an office building, you need to understand what a company wants.

When trying to get your golfing ball out of a sticky situation like a sand trap, don?t swiftly look at the ball after you hit it to see where it is going. It is essential that your head stays still while you complete your swing in order to be better.

When thinking about buying rental property, keep in mind that if you invest in rentals close to a local university your tenants will most likely be scholars. If this is appealing to you remember to write leases which incorporate definitive rules about parties and extra sharers. Also bear in mind that your tenants won't be long term, and vacancies in rental units will rise during the summer.

Learn how to be flexible in your hunt for good commercial property deals. Look through many sources to find what you want like online classified adverts and hire bird dogs to help you spot the neatest deals. Bird dogs are good finding you proper bargains. Make sure to hang around for the deal that is good for you.

As you consider a commercial investment property for your portfolio, you must explore all possibilities by completing a detailed breakdown of whether the property is income generating or non-income making. Income-producing properties would include retail sites, hotels, or warehouses. Understand the different ways that these possible tenants could generate and sustain cash flow and profit on your investment.

As you can see, there's a lot more to purchasing commercial property than most individuals think. It requires research and commonsense, but it is going to be worthwhile, in the final analysis, to get the commercial property you would like. By following the above tips, you are well on your way to purchasing your perfect commercial real estate.

Laser achieves world record power at one pulse per second

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? On the night of July 20, 2012, the laser system of the Berkeley Lab Laser Accelerator (BELLA), which is nearing completion at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), delivered a petawatt of power in a pulse just 40 femtoseconds long at a pulse rate of one hertz -- one pulse every second. A petawatt is 1015 watts, a quadrillion watts, and a femtosecond is 10-15 second, a quadrillionth of a second. No other laser system has achieved this peak power at this rapid pulse rate.

"This represents a new world record," said Wim Leemans of Berkeley Lab's Accelerator and Fusion Research Division (AFRD) when announcing the late-night success to his team. Leemans heads AFRD's Lasers and Optical Accelerator Systems Integrated Studies program (LOASIS) and conceived BELLA in 2006.

"My congratulations to the BELLA team for this early mark of success," said Berkeley Lab Director Paul Alivisatos. "This is encouraging progress toward a future generation of smaller and far more efficient accelerators to maintain our nation's leadership in the tools of basic science."

"Congratulations to all of you on this spectacular achievement," said Stephen Gourlay, Director of AFRD. "It doesn't seem that long ago that BELLA was just a dream, and now there is even more to look forward to. Thank you all for the hard work and support that made this a reality."

Leemans says, "BELLA will be an exceptional tool for advancing the physics of laser and matter interactions. The laser's peak power will give us access to new regimes, such as developing compact particle accelerators for high-energy physics, and tabletop free electron lasers for investigating materials and biological systems. As we investigate these new regimes, the laser's repetition rate of one pulse per second will allow us to do 'science with error bars' -- repeated experiments within a reasonable time."

The BELLA design draws on years of laser plasma accelerator research conducted by LOASIS. Unlike conventional accelerators that use modulated electric fields to accelerate charged particles such as protons and electrons, laser plasma accelerators generate waves of electron density that move through a plasma, using laser beams to either heat and drill through a plume of gas or driving through plasma enclosed in a thin capillary in a crystalline block like sapphire. The waves trap some of the plasma's free electrons and accelerate them to very high energies within very short lengths, as if the accelerated electrons were surfing on the near-light-speed wave.

LOASIS reported its first high-quality electron beams of 100 million electron volts (100 MeV) in 2004 and the first beams of a billion electron volts (1 GeV) in 2006 -- in a sapphire block just 3.3 centimeters long. Planning for BELLA began shortly thereafter.

The BELLA laser is expected to drive what will be the first laser plasma accelerator to produce a beam of electrons with an energy of 10 billion electron volts (10 GeV). Before being converted to other uses, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center achieved 50?GeV electron beams with traditional technology, but required a linear accelerator two miles long to do it. By contrast, the BELLA accelerator is just one meter long, supported by its laser system in an adjacent room.

"LOASIS know-how in assembling our own laser systems allowed us to specify the laser requirements and specifications we'd need to achieve reliable, stable, tunable 10?GeV beams with short warm-up time," Leemans says. "U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu said that new tools lead to new science, the kind BELLA is specifically designed to do. "

The BELLA laser system has already demonstrated compressed output energy of 42.4 joules in about 40 femtoseconds at 1 Hz. Its initial peak power of one petawatt is twice that of lasers recently said to produce pulses more powerful than that consumed by the entire U.S. "at any instant in time." "Instant" is the operative word, since the BELLA laser's average power is just 42.4 watts, about what a typical household light bulb uses. The enormous peak power results from compressing that modest average power into an extremely short pulse.

Developed by Thales of France, whose team at Berkeley Lab was led by Francois Lureau, and installed in facilities constructed at Berkeley Lab, the BELLA laser system is fully integrated with Berkeley Lab equipment and personnel protection systems. It is expected to rapidly improve upon its first record-breaking performance and will soon be able to deliver the powerful pulses needed to create 10-billion-electron-volt electron beams in an accelerator just one meter long. Experiments to demonstrate BELLA's ability to attain 10-GeV beams will begin this fall.

Why Aren't You In Shape Yet? ? 6400 Personal Finance

I swear I am going to tie this in to personal finance.

Did you see the tagline for this blog? ?A Comprehensive Approach To Your Net Worth.?? You didn?t think I just meant money stuff did you?

A couple weeks ago I laid out line by line how with a relatively small outlay of $2,000 you could outfit your home with a badass set of gym equipment that will most likely not need to ever be replaced.? It included dumbbells, a?barbell, a complete 300 lbs weight set, bench, and a power cage.?If you can?t build a family of physically fit beasts?with those kinds of resources something has gone terribly wrong (I?m betting lack of motivation?on your part).

When I say physically fit beasts don?t think I?m talking Arnold size (although that would qualify).? I am a little below average height for men with a correspondingly?less than impressive bodyweight: I am in decent shape.? There are some guys in my unit though with?approximately the same build as me who are bonafide freaks of nature.? One of them?has maybe one inch in height and twenty pounds on me but is throwing around heavier weights than our 200 pound dudes.? Oh, he can also run two miles?in?less than 11 minutes, guess he is in a hurry or something.? In any case do you see my point?? Physical fitness in its truest sense is a measure of capability, not size.? Bodybuilders are a breed of athlete that specialize in size, as a member of the general public your overall goal is?improved health and improved capability.

The good news is that?fitness can be had at a very cheap price.? The bad news is that it is going to involve some mental toughness on your part (the horror!).? Since the alternative is being surprised with, I don?t know,?diabetes (LINK), perhaps you should?hear me out on the virtues of ?embracing the suck.?

$2,000 is a lot of money, got it.? Far be it from me to suggest that maybe you don?t need a $15,000 emergency fund when you have health insurance, car insurance,?homeowners insurance, etc???Lets assume that you don?t have that kind of cash lying around, how can you be expected to get into shape like these studs and studettes.??For them the competition?lies not in a game or sport but in the actual workout itself, surely they shell out tons of cash to achieve those rock-hard bodies right?? Well, to a certain extent yes, being a member of an actual Crossfit gym is expensive as is membership in most other commercial gyms.? Suppose I told you that I could get you going on the road to physical fitness for a one-time purchase of $30?? Would you be interested? (<? rhetorical question)

$30 gets you a pullup bar that you can mount in your bedroom doorway without the need for screwing it into the doorway itself.? Takes about two seconds to set up and then take down.? It also allows you to perform pullups, chinups, ankles to bar, and any other number of exercises that involve getting your feet off of the ground.? I could get you in shape for free but pullups are just so ridiculously awesome at turning you into a physically useful human being that to not get the bar would almost seem criminal.

So now that we have you equipped with a pullup bar (I?m assuming you have a doorway available) and your body the next common excuse for not being in shape is ?not enough time.?? If this is your excuse let me ask you if you do any of the following at least three times a week:

Watch a half-hour format TV show
Prepare?a Digiorno (sp?) pizza
Read 10-15 news articles and/or blog entries online

Its not an all-encompassing list but I bet most of you reading this are guility of some of these activities.? Be honest with yourselves, heck I am guility of the first and last ones on a daily basis and the middle one on pretty much a weekly basis.? All three involve more than twenty minutes of that time that you just don?t have.? Allow me to suggest a simple trade: any of those activities for Alice.

Who is Alice?? Alice is a very simple workout consisting of three basic exercises: the pullup, the pushup, and the squat (no bar, just your bodyweight, this is cheap remember?).? The exercises are performed like so:

5 reps of pullups
10 reps of pushups
15 reps of squats

For those of you unfamiliar with Crossfit terminology performing that group of exercises one time though is one ?round?.? The way Alice works is you do as many rounds as you can in 20 minutes.? The only measure of how well you are doing is what you did last time vs what you did this time.? Being a mere mortal my best score at this point is 16 rounds, some of the guys I referenced earlier are in the 23-25 round range.? If you start out doing five rounds and you had to stand on a chair to help you with the chinups thats fine as long as when you do it the next month you can do six rounds.? Thats the beauty of working out: you only have to compete against yourself, progress is measured by your performance now versus your performance in the past, not how well you stack up against that guy who ran track at LSU.

20 minutes and $30: you know that you can afford it, the only question is whether you want it badly enough.? Frankly, if you are truly a personal finance nut and are really into being frugal and saving every penny that you can then I would call your bluff if being physically fit was not one of your top five priorities.? Its a lot more expensive to be fat and diseased than it is to be lean and mean.? Or, as said in better by the legendary Mark Rippetoe:

Strong people are harder to kill than weak people and more useful in general.

Yeah, what he said.

Senate ready for symbolic showdown on tax cuts

In this July 24, 2012, photo, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, talks to reporters following a closed-door political strategy session at the Capitol in Washington. (AP) ? Senate leaders moved toward a showdown Wednesday with votes on rival Democratic and Republican plans for extending broad tax cuts that will otherwise expire in January.

In an announcement that seemed to surprise Democrats, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on the Senate floor that he was accepting a Democratic offer to hold back-to-back roll calls on both parties' bills, with each measure requiring just a simple majority for passage.

The new plan puts pressure on Democrats to avoid an embarrassing defeat of their own tax cut plan, which closely resembles proposals by President Barack Obama to extend tax cuts for all but the nation's highest earners. Republicans want the top earners to keep their tax cuts, too.

It also raises the stakes for some Democratic senators in close re-election races. The Democratic measure includes items like a sharply higher tax on inherited estates, which could be an issue in states with a high cost of living or with many farms and ranches.

"A vote for the Democrat plan is a vote to put these farms and ranches out of business," McConnell said.

Until now, the Senate had planned to vote only on the Democratic bill under rules requiring 60 votes to allow debate to proceed. Democrats would not be able to reach that number, but it is often easier for wavering lawmakers to vote for such a procedural motion than it is to vote for a bill on final passage.

"The only way to force people to take a stand is to make sure that today's votes truly count," McConnell said, adding, "Nobody on the other side can hide behind a procedural vote while leaving their views on the actual bill itself a mystery to the people who sent them here."

Even so, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., expressed confidence.

"Our bill has the support of President Obama, has the support of the Democratic caucus, it has the support of the American people," he said.

In a statement, the White House restated its backing for the plan.

"All sides agree on the need to extend the tax cuts for the middle class," it said. "This legislation reflects that consensus, and should not be held hostage while debating the merits of another tax cut for the wealthy."

Democrats have little margin for error. There are 51 Democrats and two independents who usually vote with them.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., said Wednesday that he will vote against the Democratic bill because he thinks lawmakers should instead be trying to reduce the deficit. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., seemed to indicate that he would vote "no" as well, saying he would not vote to increase any taxes on earned income such as salaries.

Even if the Democratic bill is approved, its significance remains no more than a political statement because it has no chance of surviving in the Republican-run House.

There are 47 Republicans in the Senate, and their measure seems certain to fail. The $405 billion GOP measure would continue tax cuts for everyone next year, including the highest earners.

The $250 billion Democratic bill would continue tax cuts through 2013 for everyone but individuals who earn at least $200,000 yearly and couples making $250,000.

Those taxpayers would face top rates of 36 percent and 39.6 percent, respectively, instead of today's 33 percent and 35 percent. That would mean higher taxes for 2.5 million households, or 2 percent of all 140.5 million tax returns, according to 2009 data from the Internal Revenue Service.

Democrats say levies on the wealthy should rise because all income groups should contribute to deficit reduction. Republicans say those tax increases would burden the owners of many companies, leaving them less money to create jobs.

The Democratic bill also would let the top estate tax rate grow to 55 percent next year, with only the first $1 million in an estate's value exempted.

Republicans would renew today's milder 35 percent top rate, exempting the first $5.12 million. Congress' nonpartisan Joint Committee on Taxation says the lower Democratic threshold would affect the owners of 55,200 estates whose existing rates are projected to expire next year ? a tiny percentage of Americans, but far more than the 3,600 who would be exposed under the GOP's terms.

Democrats would impose top tax rates next year of 20 percent on dividends and capital gains, two sources of income enjoyed disproportionately by the wealthy. The GOP top rate would be 15 percent.

The GOP bill ignores some tax breaks for low- and middle-income families that Democrats want to extend for college costs; large, some low-income couples and large working families; and for families with children.

All were part of Obama's 2009 stimulus bill, which Democrats say were meant to be permanent but Republicans say were only a short-term response to the recession.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was ready to push legislation through his chamber next week that closely mirrors the Senate GOP measure. Republicans there introduced their bill on Tuesday, accompanied by another measure designed to speed work next year on legislation overhauling the entire tax code.

UK PM's ex-aide, Murdoch protege face hacking charges

Facundo Arrizabalaga / EPA, file

Andy Coulson, one-time communications director for Prime Minister David Cameron and former editor of News of the World, is among those who face charges in the British phone-hacking scandal. He is shown here on May 10.

By NBC News and wire services

Updated at 11:55 a.m. ET: LONDON --?British authorities on Tuesday charged an ex-aide to the British prime minister, a former protege of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and six others in the ever-widening phone-hacking scandal. Prosecutors accused those charged of key roles in a lengthy campaign of illegal espionage that victimized hundreds, including top celebrities Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.

The announcement was a major development in a saga that has transfixed and at times horrified Britons and one that shows no signs of ending. A senior police official told The Associated Press earlier this week that her force was investigating more than 100 claims including computer hacking and illegal access to medical records stemming from the scandal.

Prosecutors said?Tuesday that Andy Coulson, Cameron's communications director for four years until 2011, and Rebekah Brooks, who oversaw Murdoch's News International, would face charges of conspiracy to intercept communications.

The alleged offenses were committed between 2000 and 2006 when both served as editor of the News of the World, the salacious Sunday tabloid that Murdoch was forced to close a year ago amid public disgust at the phone-hacking revelations.

Among the alleged victims were two former British home secretaries, former England soccer manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, Hollywood stars Jolie and Pitt, former Beatle Paul McCartney and a minor member of the royal family, Lord Frederick Windsor, the son of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.

Brooks and Coulson are also both accused of involvement in hacking the telephone of Milly Dowler, a missing teenage girl who was later found murdered in 2002.

Coulson: 'I will fight these allegations'
It was the revelation that News of the World journalists had hacked her phone that triggered a furor that engulfed Murdoch's News International and ultimately led to the closure of the 168-year-old tabloid.

"I am extremely disappointed by the [prosecutors'] decision today. I will fight these allegations when they eventually get to court,? Coulson said in a statement quoted by Britain's The Guardian newspaper.

"I would like to say one thing today about the Milly Dowler allegation. Anyone who knows me, or who worked with me, would know that I wouldn't, and more importantly that I didn't, do anything to damage the Milly Dowler investigation," the statement said.

Brooks sounded a defiant tone.

"I am not guilty of these charges," she said in a statement. "I did not authorize, nor was I aware of, phone hacking under my editorship.

"The charge concerning Milly Dowler is particularly upsetting not only as it is untrue but also because I have spent my journalistic career campaigning for victims of crime. I will vigorously defend these allegations," her statement said.

Others being charged are senior tabloid journalists Stuart Kuttner, Greg Miskiw, Neville Thurlbeck, James Weatherup and Ian Edmondson.

Also being charged is private investigator Glenn Mulcaire, whose extensive notes have been at the center of the scandal since it was first unearthed.

External link: Read the phone charges in full here

The maximum sentence for the phone-hacking charges is two years in prison or a fine -- or both.

'Astonishing development'
The development is particularly embarrassing for Cameron because Coulson was also charged with hacking the phones of David Blunkett and Charles Clarke, two former home secretaries from the now-opposition Labour Party. The home secretary is Britain?s top law enforcement official, roughly akin to an American attorney general.

"That is an astonishing development and I think that is almost inevitably going to rebound on Cameron," Steven Barnett, professor of communications at Westminster University, said. "That is going to pose some very, very awkward questions for the prime minister."

Alison Levitt, Principal Legal Adviser to the Director of Public Prosecutions, said she had concluded there was sufficient evidence to charge the eight suspects with 19 offenses over the illegal accessing of voicemails on the cellphones belonging to politicians, celebrities and sports figures.

Former UK PM accuses Murdoch of misleading inquiry into phone-hack scandal

News International had for years denied that phone hacking was widespread after the tabloid's former royal reporter and private detective were jailed in 2007 for the crime.

Poor judgment?
Coulson resigned in the aftermath, and took up the role as director of communications of Cameron's Conservative Party, helping to shape his campaign to become prime minister.

Neil Hall / Reuters, file

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks, shown leaving London's Southwark Crown Court on June 22, will face charges in the phone-hacking scandal

Critics say Cameron appointed Coulson in order to secure the backing of the journalist's former boss, Murdoch, and say the appointment showed a shocking lack of judgment.

Complete UK news coverage on NBCNews.com

The involvement of Coulson and Brooks -- a close friend of Cameron?s -- turned the long-running hacking story into a national political scandal that has laid bare the collusion between senior politicians, the police and the media.

Brooks, her husband and her personal staff have already been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice over the hacking case, while Coulson has been charged in Scotland with perjury after he denied in an unrelated court case any knowledge of phone hacking.

Brooks, wooed by a string of politicians and prime ministers first in her role as editor of the News of the World and Sun tabloid, and then as the head of Murdoch's British newspaper arm News International, was one of the most powerful women in Britain, instantly recognizable by her long, curly red hair.

She was also close to Cameron, socializing with him over Christmas breaks, and both were embarrassed earlier this year when an inquiry into media ethics read out text messages sent between the two.

Rupert Murdoch not 'a fit person' to run major company, UK lawmakers say

Cameron used to sign his frequent text messages to Brooks with an affectionate "LOL", which he thought stood for "lots of love."

Damaging, but not fatal, to Cameron's political fortunes
Paul Farrelly, an opposition Labour lawmaker who questioned Rupert Murdoch and his son James as part of a parliamentary committee investigation into the hacking, said Tuesday's developments were damaging, but not fatal, for Cameron.

"My view is that what happens to Andy Coulson and Rebekah Brooks reflects on David Cameron's judgment in both the appointment of Coulson and in being seen to be so close to a certain newspaper empire," he said.

"Because it's been going on so long, it's in no way fatal to his premiership. What is more important to the survival of his premiership and the coalition is the economy," Farrelly added.

July 24, 1701: Cadillac Lands

Night Train To Detroit:

Today marks 311 years since Antoine Cadillac, after six weeks' voyage from Montreal, shored his canoe and founded Detroit for France. To celebrate, here's an excerpt from my book, Hidden History of Detroit, which includes a chapter on Cadillac, the self-styled Marquis du ville de Troit.

Bon anniversaire, you strange and wonderful city.

Detroiters like to begin this story on July 24, 1701, on the rough, weedy banks of the Detroit River. With daylight on the water and the wilderness humming with bugs, birds and fruit so fat you can hear it hanging from its branches, a fleet of 50 canoes glides up to the edge of the land.

Two people who registered early are mother and daughter, and Wendy Weiler and Barbara Robertson. Let?s get to know Wendy and Barb.

Wendy Weiler says, ?I was twelve or thirteen when I was introduced to Emily Dickinson and Edgar Allen Poe. This sparked an interest in writing poetry which allowed me an opportunity to express myself.?I wrote poetry throughout my school years, and when I went to college, I enrolled in?creative writing and journalism courses at Seminole State College.?I still enjoy poetry and hope to put together a book on my poems.?

Barbara Robertson says, ?I read incessantly as a young girl, sometimes reading late into the night when my parents were asleep.??A career as a secretary afforded me many opportunities to develop some writing and?composition skills.??I attended a Florida Writers Association conference with Wendy several years ago and found?out about Patricia and Writing?Your Life.??I love to express myself, and this is a wonderful outlet.? Both my daughter and I are looking forward to the cruise to further enhance our writing skills.?

Find The Stock Market Confusing? Keep Reading

Posted on July 23, 2012 by William Tan in The Smart Investor

It is very exciting to jump into the stock market. There are many different investment vehicles, tailored to different financial goals and involving different amounts of risk. No matter which stocks strike your interest or how much you have to invest, you really need to ascertain a solid understanding of the market fundamentals. The below article provides some excellent investing advice that can assist you in having this needed understanding.

Short selling might be an option you can try. This involves making use of loaning stock shares. The borrower hopes that the price of the shares drops before the date they have to be returned, making a profit on the difference. The investor sells the stock and buys it back after the price drops.

If you?re currently active in trading, find alternative ways to get to your account in case you aren?t home or the website is inaccessible. When you use an online trading company, you can usually order a trade via fax or a phone call. That being said, you may get charged extra for this service.

Participate in an Internet investing forum. Being part of a forum will give you the opportunity to learn the tricks that others have found successful. Not only will your experience help others, but others may help you as well. When you join a forum, you can gain information that can otherwise not be learned from elsewhere.

Try not investing a lot in the company where you?re employed. It can be risky to own stock of the company that you work for. If something happens to your company you are out of pay and stock. However, if you get a discounted rate on showers, you might have good reason to buy.

Investment Choices

Consider hiring a broker. They can help you avoid terrible investment choices, and they can teach you all about investing. Professional brokers can provide you with valuable knowledge and insiders advice that can help you to make smart investment choices. They can also give you help with the management of your stock portfolio, allowing you to keep up with your goals.

Ask yourself what drives the value of a stock. Your gut instincts may give you many good answers. When you have seen any company?s balance sheet you should then assess whether or not you want to make an investment based upon it. It not, why would you buy their stock? At the least, it is an indication of the fact that you are not qualified to make a judgment on that company.

Try out paper trading before you get into the stock market. This practice will teach you a great deal about the way the stock market operates and let you sharpen your investing skills without risking your money. This kind of method involves using imaginary money and investment techniques that could be used in the real stock market.

If you own shares in a company, you have the chance to vote for a company?s board of directors. When major changes or merges might happen you could have a say in it because of the amount of stocks you hold with a given company. Voting happens either through the mail or in an annual shareholders? meeting.

Subscribe to a reputable investment service. A service that is very good with the stock market should suffice. These services will not only help you choose the right stocks to invest in, many also provide software to help you with your trading and managing your portfolio. If you start to see a profit, it?s well worth the cost.

You may want to invest in an excellent investment software package. This enables you to keep an eye on your stocks, and it also provides you with a greater understanding of how the prices fluctuate. The software can be used to check the diversity of your investments often with portfolio reviews. Check the web for reviews of the myriad programs available. This will help you determine which software will be most beneficial for your situation and level of knowledge.

Don?t let your money stagnate in stocks that aren?t showing regular gains. A stock can stagnate and neither gain or lose money. In this instance it is best to sell rather than having your money tied up in the stock. Try to locate a stock with a bit of activity.

It is important that you always maintain realistic perspectives when you are investing in stocks and shares. Keep your expectations realistic and don?t fall for unrealistic promises of returns. The more reasonable your expectations are for your investments, the more likely it is that you will be able to achieve your financial goals.

It can be exciting and fun to get involved with the stock market, whatever way you choose to do that. Whatever your investment plans might include, follow the tips that have been outlined here to improve profits and reduce losses in the market.

You need to set a stopping point for your stock purchases. To be successful you need to stick to your limits rigidly. The second you learn that the stocks have reached the limits, you must act. If, however, you feel that the fall is temporary, you might risk keeping them. In a lot of cases, selling your stocks before you lose any money is your best option.
