After months of supporting air combat patrols over the politically volatile Persian Gulf region from United Arab Emirates, the peninsula country mere miles from Iran, about 230 Louisiana Air National Guard airmen are expected to arrive home Thursday. The 159th Fighter Wing airmen, who deployed in June, are scheduled to be greeted by family and friends at the Naval Air Station-Joint Reserve Base in Belle Chasse, home to the Air Guard unit known as the ?Bayou Militia.?
The pilots of the wing?s 122nd Fighter Squadron, whose role in the U.S. military inventory is air superiority, or dominating the skies through modern-day dogfights, are scheduled to fly their F-15 Eagle fighter jets home Friday, according to the National Guard.
The Bayou Militia pilots and ground crews filled a slot in the Air Force?s 380th Air Expeditionary Wing, which is based at Al Dhafra Air Base.
The deployment marked the first time in more than a decade that the Bayou Militia fighters deployed overseas for something other than a training mission.
In 2001, they deployed to Turkey to help enforce the ?no-fly zones? over northern Iraq. Overall, the Bayou Militia patrolled the no-fly zones five times after the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
Since the 2001 terrorist attacks, the Bayou Militia has kept armed F-15s on alert at the air station as part of the nation?s homeland defense mission.
